Have your say on Brantford Cemeteries
The City of Brantford (City) is undertaking a comprehensive study to update its Cemetery Master Plan to guide the future development, operation, care, and maintenance of the Brantford Cemeteries. This study will enable the City to understand the community’s interment, and memorialization needs, and to ensure there is sufficient capacity and inventory to serve families for the next 25 years. The study will focus on five cemeteries under municipal management which include Oakhill Cemetery, Mount Hope Cemetery, Greenwood Cemetery, Batson Cemetery, and Tranquility Cemetery.
We need your input! By participating, you will help us accurately establish the needs, wishes, and preferences of those served by these cemeteries. Your thoughts and ideas are needed to help guide the recommendations of the City's Master Plan, and the future of Brantford's Cemeteries.

plot6about 1 month agoIn addition to their cultural value, cemeteries also have potential as economic drivers. When maintained they have park like environments.
Their open space, historic charm and interesting landscape can serve as event venues and educational experiences. There could be movie nights, walking tours, gardening classes etc.

Cemeteries are spaces for all citizens but not for all types of activities. All types of users should be invited inside as long as they behave with respect for the deceased and their relatives and the cemetery’s primary function as a burial ground.

Their purpose would obviously be restricted to the direction of the city
0 comment0plot6about 1 month agoEncourage non-traditional uses of cemetery space.
Walking for exercise on cemetery paths. Random usage by walkers in itself is a security measure.

Many well-known Brantford families are represented, old headstones have how the person died, and what their position in life was. Have pupils determine why there might be a high number of deaths in a particular year, or why so many children died, what the life expectancy of people in time etc. They could also do grave stone stencilling. Students could see what gravestones have survived time and those that have eroded due to the type of stone used, and the engraving technology available at the time. The size and subject design of the gravestone gives insight into the life of the deceased. Soldiers' graves will be interesting to speculate on. There is so much more that can be learned from this untapped resource, and I am sure pupils will have more questions that may or may not have answers.
