    To find out if someone is interred at a City of Brantford Cemetery, please call us at 519-753-0313, email cemeteries@brantford.ca or visit the Cemeteries Administration Office in-person at Mount Hope Cemetery, located at 169 Charing Cross Street, during business hours. The Office is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.and closed for lunch from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.

    How many people can be interred in one traditional burial, adult cemetery lot?

    If interment rights were purchased prior to January 1, 2002, one casket burial and two cremations or no casket burial with three cremations are permitted. If interment rights were purchased on or after January 1, 2002, a casket burial and one cremation or no casket burial with two cremations are permitted.

    What lot decorations are prohibited and permitted?

    The following lot decorations are permitted during the times specified below.

    • pot stands (hanger or holder style) June 1 to October 1;
    • artificial wreaths on wire tripod stands November 1 to March 31;
    • in-ground saddle wreaths (on flat marker lots only) November 1 to March 31;
    • monument saddle wreaths (year round); and
    • potted plants two days prior and four days following Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Christmas Day.

    The following items are prohibited

    • in-ground vases; 
    • coping, 
    • fences, 
    • curbs, 
    • steps, 
    • glass; 
    • structures of wood or equally perishable material; 
    • stone chips or flowerbed borders; 
    • symbols or signs constructed of any material, with the exception of those on approved monuments; and 
    • candles, candle holders, or both

    Does the City of Brantford have a program to maintain flowers at a grave?

    The City of Brantford has a Lot Service Program with options for an in-ground garden, in front of up-right monuments, or a potted flower arrangement in hanging basket or holder style plant stand for the summer season.  The City supplies and plants the flowers for the in-ground gardens or the potted flower arrangement, waters daily, fertilizes as required, and maintains these throughout the summer season.

    Can I/we/a relative be buried in a family plot and/or change the memorialization?

    What will the Brantford Cemeteries Master Plan include?

    The Brantford Cemeteries Master Plan will include the following:

    • An in-depth current state summary of the market area profile, including an analysis of demographic data and trends in disposition and interment in the City.
    • A cemetery demand-needs analysis that identifies current and projected interment and sales capture rates to determine the remaining sales capacity and future development needs.
    • Detailed engagement process with targeted consultation of local religious/cultural groups with unique cemetery needs, Veterans' service clubs, funeral industry practitioners, and the public, in addition to sessions with staff and council.
    • An operations review of cemetery policies, practices and resources related to their administration, service delivery, care, and maintenance. 
    • A financial analysis that assesses the cemetery system’s ability to recover its short-term operating costs, future financial operating plan and the long-term sustainability of its Care & Maintenance Fund.
    • Infill concept plans for Mount Hope Cemetery and phase development concept plans for Oakhill Cemeteries that will guide future improvements and enhancements.
