The City of Brantford, along with the City of Cambridge and the Township of North Dumfries, is exploring a potential merger of municipally-owned holding companies, and affiliates, including Brantford Power Inc. and Energy+ Inc.

The electricity industry in Ontario is undergoing significant change – how power is generated, how it is used, and how energy is conserved. The energy needs and service expectations within our community and across Ontario continue to evolve and grow at a rapid pace. The decision by municipal shareholders to explore the possibility of merging two electric utilities is driven by some key factors including:

  • Experience from other utility mergers in Ontario has demonstrated that consolidation of electric utilities has resulted in positive outcomes for the customers, the communities, the shareholders and the employees;
  • The Ontario government’s ongoing attention on local distribution companies (LDCs) finding efficiencies through consolidation, and,
  • Ontario electric utilities are rapidly changing, introducing technological advancements in response to customer wants and needs. A merger is a pathway for utilities to move forward with new technologies.

The City of Brantford and Brantford Power Inc want to hear any questions or thoughts you may have about a potential merger of the holding companies and affiliates that would include Brantford Power and Energy+. Public input and feedback will be shared with Brantford City Council to help inform a decision about whether or not to move forward with a merger.
