The City of Brantford is developing a Solid Waste Strategy to support the goals of increasing waste diversion, preserving the landfill, and protecting the environment.
Brantford’s Solid Waste Strategy will present a roadmap to achieve 70% residential waste diversion from the landfill through waste avoidance, reuse, composting, and recycling by 2050. The goal is for our waste-conscious City to protect our environment and climate, ensure community well-being, build strong partnerships, spark innovation, and support our local economy.
Diversion and why it matters
Diversion is the percentage of materials reduced, recycled, or composted and kept away from our landfill for disposal.
Diverting waste is a vital step in preserving our City’s landfill, promoting environmental sustainability, and taking action against climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Right now, 34% of our waste is being diverted from our landfill.
Reaching diversion rates past 70% is an ambitious endeavour and needs a long-term commitment. Together, as a community, we will need to work towards change through new programs, partnerships, policy, innovation, and shifting our behaviours and thinking.
