When will Southwest Community Park be open to the public?
Construction began in September 2024. The future Southwest Community Park is expected to be completed by fall 2026.
What sports amenities will be provided in Southwest Community Park?
The future Southwest Community Park will include a competition level natural turf cricket pitch, a competition level artificial turf soccer field, multi-use sports court, an in-ground concrete skate park, and five pickleball courts. Additional amenities will include a new playground and splash pad, and accessible paved trail networks.
Will baseball diamonds be included in the final design for the future Southwest Community Park?
Baseball diamonds will not be included in the future Southwest Community Park design due limited land available for construction. The City is aware of the need for additional ball diamonds in Brantford and is actively looking into options elsewhere within the City.
Will residents and user groups be able to book the cricket pitch and soccer field when they open?
Yes, the cricket pitch and soccer field will be available to book once they are open for play. Details on how to book will be shared when the park is scheduled to open.
Will the cricket pitch and soccer field offer lighting for night time use at the future Southwest Community Park?
Both sports fields will provide ample lighting to ensure play an begin earlier in the spring season and extend later into the fall season, weather permitting.
What considerations were made to traffic demands for the surrounding road network and community surrounding the future Southwest Community Park??
A traffic study was completed in 2017 for the initial concepts for the Southwest Sports Park. As a requirement of the Site Plan Approval Process for the park, an update to this study was completed in 2022/23 to review the impact of the park and the adjacent Joint Build Project on the existing road network. This study examined:
As a result of this work it was determined that the existing road network can support the proposed land uses without any major modifications.
Will washroom facilities be available to everyone that visits the future Southwest Community Park and will they be maintained and cleaned regularly?
Several universal, men's and women's washrooms and change areas will be available for public use.The washrooms and change areas will be maintained and cleaned regularly by City staff.
Will sufficient garbage bins and benches be onsite at the future Southwest Community Park?
Garbage and recycling bins will be placed in strategic locations throughout the new park. Seating will be included at all main amenities and throughout the park and alongside pathways.
Is the future Southwest Community park full accessible?
All park amenities have been designed with accessibility in mind. This began with the requirement for park features to be barrier free, with access routes containing slopes not exceeding five percent. Specific considerations were made for inclusion within the soccer field where an elevated bleacher system incorporates seating opportunities for all, and the cricket pitch where dedicated seating spaces have been provided. Both public washroom buildings will include universal washroom stalls and FADS adherent designs for all change rooms. The playground and splash pad have been designed to provide play opportunities for all users – with features at varying levels and accessible ramping provided.
Is there sufficient parking provided for peak season usage at the future Southwest Community Park site?
Parking lots have been laid out to provide convenient and safe access to the multiple park activities, with pedestrian access provided via a raised crosswalk for the neighbouring school site to the park. 224 parking spaces will be available onsite, with an additional 136 spaces available on the future school site. Parking availability is in line with what was recommended during a completed traffic impact study. Accessible parking will also be included.
